Workshop Simple Light Measurement Method

Thursday 30th, 17:30 – 19:00

Organised by Andreas Hänel

The aim of this workshop is to present, test and compare some simple light measurement methods, which will be more first approximation estimations than high accuracy. Due to the moon phase no sky brightness measurements are planned.

The workshop addresses participants, that are interested in testing these light measurement methods, that should be presented to people who are non-experts like members of NGOs, nature protection organisations or applicants for dark sky places and who often ask for this.

We will test:

  • The accuracy by comparing different instruments (illuminance meters, SQM-Ls). One will also be the Opple Light Master.
  • Road lighting measurements to determine mean illuminance and uniformity with several methods like using norms or simplified methods (eg. van Bommel). We try to do these measurements in the small roads around the conference site (if itdoes not rain!). This should be possible after the end of civil twilight.
  • Illuminance measurements of signs with SQM-L, exposure meter of digital cameras or lux meters. These shall be tested on signs around the conference site(if existing, otherwise on a test screen).
  • Measuring correlated color temperature.

If available, participants should bring own lux meters, SQMs, cameras, luminance meters, or else.

Introductory information will be available on a poster we present at the conference.

Maximum number of participants: 15, more if other experts will help. Please sign up at the conference registration.

For more information, contact Andreas Hänel at the conference or send him an email at ahaenel@uos.de (Note that Andreas is already traveling Ireland for measurements, so his reply can take some time).
